Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am a psychiatrist and psychotherapist in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I was the founder in 1972 of the First Therapeutic Community of addiction in The Netherlands, the Emiliehoeve, in the Hague.
I was the Medical Director of the Drug Free and Methadone programs in The Hague and Rotterdam and of the Jellinek Center for Addiction in Amsterdam. I have been teaching at the Department of Preventive and Social Psychiatry of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
More recently, I have been the Medical Director of centers for war victims and traumatized refugees in The Netherlands.
I was co-founder of the European (EFTC) and of the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities (WFTC), founder of the European Working Group of Drug-policy Oriented Research (EWODOR) and co-founder of the International Society for Bonding Psychotherapy (ISBP). I am Honorary Board Member of the EFTC, Teaching Fellow and Board Member of the ISBP.
My thesis on the theory, practice and research of therapeutic communities for addicts was published in 1992 (Free download at: https:\/\/repub.eur.nl\/pub\/40357\/<\/a>).
My book on therapeutic communities for addicts based on my thesis has been published in English and translated into Spanish, Polish and Czech language.
I published papers on addiction, therapeutic communities and refugees.
I have been Member of the Advisory Council of The Minister of Justice on Prison Detention and Youth Protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been Vice President of EURAD, a policy network
organization on Prevention and Treatment of Addiction to Drugs.
I have been a member of the UNODC\/WHO Expert Committee on
Building International Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use
Disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am co-founder of the therapeutic community De Stam in The
Hague. I am president of the Association of Friends of Drug free
Programs in The Netherlands<\/p>\n\n\n\n
